What You Will Do

Big data analytics and the incredible level of insight and knowledge they offer require leading-edge capabilities in High Performance Computing (HPC). BCT provides design, engineering, testing, benchmark development, and operational support for specialized processing solutions designed to execute some of the world’s most complex analytic problems. From technology assessments and evaluations through system architecture and engineering to implementation and acquisition, BCT contributes to the delivery of HPC solutions that are the foundation for critical advancements in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and High-Performance Data Analytics (HPDA).

BCT is seeking graduate-level students looking for an exciting paid internship. All candidates will be provided with a mentor, a challenging and exciting project, and the potential to obtain a security clearance and join BCT full-time supporting the Intelligence Community.

The projects we have to offer will vary depending on the skills and interests of the candidate and our current needs, such as:

• HPC benchmarking - Benchmarks measure the performance of HPC hardware (such as CPUs, GPUs, FPGAs, memory modules, interconnects, etc.) and provide valuable information to application developers and other stakeholders. Such developers and stakeholders use this information to make all manner of decisions that will determine the success or failure of their applications and also to monitor the health of the HPC over time. Furthermore, because each new generation of HPC hardware includes new capabilities (e.g. increased SIMD widths, new instructions, novel memory configurations, etc.) it is imperative that benchmarks are updated regularly and test all capabilities of the hardware. Consequently, for this task, you will work with and develop deep expertise with the latest hardware. In addition, you will update and utilize numerous benchmarks to characterize the performance of that hardware.
• HPC research - New innovations in industry are constantly changing the nature of HPC. For example, virtualized, container, and cloud environments offer new possibilities for HPC architectures, new compilers and frameworks promise newfound portability/productivity, etc. In this position, you will research one or more of these new tools/technologies, tune the performance of a technology (perhaps even rewriting portions of its software, as necessary), develop recommendations for the successful use of a tool on a variety of benchmark codes, demonstrate your work, and report your findings.
• Data analytics / machine learning - Networks are attacked every day by a variety of adversaries. The amount of network data that an organization captures as it tries to defend itself from such attacks (even during a relatively small amount of time) easily fills terabytes of space. In this position you will analyze this data, using a variety of techniques from data science and machine learning, attempt to characterize attributes of the adversaries, and report your results.
• Automated HPC administration - Data center startup and sustainment is an often onerous, manual task that has become increasingly automated in recent years with infrastructure automation tools gaining in popularity. With automation, a data center can be powered on and configured with the push of a button, and HPC sustainment becomes virtually seamless. In this position, you will help to research automation tools as well as implement prototypes for various aspects of HPC automation such as zero-touch provisioning, metrics and monitoring, and continuous testing and system verification. You will learn best practices in the "infrastructure-as-code" realm of HPC and apply them to real-world problems at a large scale.

What You Need

We are seeking various computational skills employed in an HPC environment. To receive full consideration, candidates must be pursuing one of the following degrees (or a substantially equivalent degree)

• Computer Science
• Computer or electrical engineering
• Mathematics
• Physics

AND, knowledge and/or introductory experience in one or more of the following areas:

• Parallel Programming
• Programming skills
• Working in a collaborative team environment
• Time management skills

Where You Will Work

This is a remote work location. BCT LLC is located in is Annapolis Junction, Maryland, and supports a local intelligence community customer.
